Dr. Manish Gala

Dr. Manish Gala is a Physician-scientist in the CTEU, an attending gastroenterologist at MGH. Dr. Gala earned his MD at Harvard Medical School. He completed his training in internal medicine at Stanford University before completing a gastroenterology fellowship at MGH. His research emphasis is in how germline variation shapes tumor evolution, cancer risk, and response to precision therapies. His laboratory is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIDDK) and employs integration of population genetics and cancer genomics with organoid models and single-cell sequencing.

Pathogenic Germline Mutations in Barrett's Esophagus (R01)

This NIDDK-funded project explores how Barrett's esophagus (BE) evolves to neoplasia in a relatively unexplored pathway in which 25% of the resulting cases lack TP53 mutations. Our previous observation is that individuals with Barrett's esophagus and genetic carriers of pathogenic mutations in ATM and BRCA2 reliably develop esophageal cancers without TP53 mutations. Through population genetics, organoid modeling, and single-cell sequencing we will examine genetic risks and somatic evolutionary features during disease progression.
